In so doing, he becomes a skilled siege master in his own right, a talent he will soon need to conquer the great stone fortress cities in the epic contest history calls the First Crusade.

The Siege Master's Song The Recollections of Lord Godric MacEuan on the First Crusade Volume Two (The Siege Master series) (Volume 2) Just finished Siege Master's Song and thoroughly enjoyed it! A sequel to Call to Crusade, it sure started off in a dark place as Godric cleaned up his manor and set it on a new path. However, it turned into a great read. I loved the development of Cedric, well-played, and the character of Bjorn the bear with all the twists and turns. The siege of OdinsOye was great and just a taste of what was to come. The tactics of the siege master was especially compelling to me, since I took a college history class on siege engines and their development. The many maps and descriptions of the sieges painted an excellent picture so the reader knows what's going on.

So many relations, so few loyalties that stand the time of passage is what I got out of the story line. Brother turned against brother, allegiances changed at will, treachery and boorishness seem to be the rule, not the exception. The research was extensive and would do a librarian proud. I look forward to March to Nicaea and will put it on my birthday list for April!
Tom Vetter does it again! A well-written story that's both entertaining and historically accurate - I finished the story with "oh darn!" on my lips because the next volume isn't out yet! I'm eager for more of Godric MacEuan's tale. Capably handled by Vetter, the actual history doesn't bog down with dates and places, but provides the "good bones" to a story so well imagined and told that a sense of realistic immediacy results. I'm impressed (and impatiently tapping my foot).
