I am an Elizabeth Strout fan. I inhaled "Olive Kitteridge" and was left sobbing after the last chapter. I loved the quiet and soulful pace and message of "Abide With Me." And I reveled in the message and meter of "I Am Lucy Barton." "Anything Is Possible" was, in my estimation, a patchwork of depressed characters going nowhere. I kept reading hoping something would happen or at least Strout would tie all the unhappy, aimless stories together at some point. The what seemed like gratuitous sexual perversions sprinkled throughout the chapters should have had more context. They were slipped into a chapter (more like hinted at) and then abandoned. I felt the entire town was suffering from post traumatic sexual abuse and an withholding of feeling that bordered on psychotic. I was disappointed.

I enjoyed the different characters, observing life, both good & broken, that a rural town can foster. I was SO disappointed in the last part of the book!! I assumed that they would intertwine at the end, there would be a sense of conclusion....
I did not enjoy this book at all!!!! Way too many characters- about 15 or more. I finally had to go back and write them all down just to keep track with who was who and what was their connection to each other. The summary listed says it's about *two sisters" who chose different paths. Who are you referring to? One chose "a wealthy husband" and one finds a kindred spirit in a book- I hope someone reads this review and responds, letting me know which 2 sisters the synopsis is referring to- not Lucy and Vicky, not Linda Peterson Cornell and Patty, unless I missed the part about anyone changing her life by being inspired by a book. HELP!!!!
I honestly cannot understand how people have given this book more stars than one. Not trying to be unkind, but this book is awful. I had to keep forcing myself to pick it up (as I hate to NOT finish a book that I start), and each time I picked it up and read a page or several before realizing I'd already read those pages. That is a sign of a book I can't gain interest in.The characters were flat and depressing. The storylines were bizaar and pointlessly disturbing at times, without reason. I finally gave up. Don't waste your time or money.
I just want to say this first Elizabeth Strout is my new favorite author. She consistently writes with an empathetic and wise compassion of the human condition. Her books touch my heart.

"Anything Is Possible" is a continuation--not a sequel--to "My Name Is Lucy Barton." Do read "Lucy Barton" first as it adds to the richness and depth of "Anything." Lucy grows up in an impoverished and abusive home in Amgash, Illinois. She marries, moves to New York City and becomes a successful and somewhat famous author. "Anything Is Possible" is a novel in stories with each story about someone who lives in Amgash and knew Lucy as a child. These are not happy people, for the most part. These are people who have had to fight for just about everything. But there is hope and solace in these stories.

I was enveloped by this book in a way like no other. Strout's understanding of human nature--of how we think, how we act and how we treat one another--is soul-deep.
I understand why some reviewers didn't like it and said it was nothing but a series of vignettes, but all of those vignettes were of people connected to one another and to Lucy Barton. I actually reread the book after I realized there were so many connections. I looked for those connections from the beginning when rereading.

One of the themes seemed to be how everyone or almost everyone had some bad memories from childhood, such as extreme poverty, physical/sexual abuse, etc. Some learned others saw their past differently. I don't think there was a main character. Even though Lucy Barton is frequently mentioned and makes an appearance, I don't see her as the main character. Perhaps it is the town or childhood perceptions. Perhaps it is simply how people dealt with their past. Perhaps the title tells it all.

I recommend reading "My Name is Lucy Barton" before reading this book. It helps one understand Lucy better.
Elizabeth Strout has done it again for me. The tales of the residents in a small Midwestern farming community became addictive almost immediately, but I’m having difficulty writing a review. The big news around town is that Lucy Barton has written a book after moving to Manhattan. The townspeople don’t take this news kindly because Lucy and her family were dirt-poor. She and her brother were accomplished dumpster divers, who were bullied by classmates for being dirty and smelly. What was the subject of her book, they all wondered.

As an aside, I reread MY NAME IS LUCY BARTON, having eventually let go of her story. In many ways, this book was a prequel, despite being told only by Lucy. She and her mother, who made a surprise appearance at Lucy’s hospital bed, reminisced about the townspeople for weeks. A writer friend advised Lucy to write a ruthless book. What would she say about those who had mocked her family for years?

Every character in ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE has a story to tell the town’s “good girl” with the ironic last name of Nicely, waxes poetic about running though the corn fields, when out of left field, tells of going there to grope boys; Lucy’s brother sleeps with his pigs; PTSD has reared its ugly head; certain people became rich, while others remained in poverty. In many ways, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE is a microcosm of small town America, but Lucy got out for what she considered greener pastures.

This is a depressing story, but how could it be anything else? I found it to be an honest appraisal of small town life. Elizabeth Strout does a fine job of describing the cultural divide, which began years ago, while carefully avoiding politics.
